1727 train engine

History of Locomotive #1727

One of Dunsmuir’s iconic landmarks is Southern Pacific Engine #1727, proudly displayed at the entrance to Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens, just off I-5. Donated to the city by Southern Pacific in 1950, this noble steam locomotive has recently undergone a remarkable restoration. Thanks to generous community donations and the tireless efforts of local volunteers, the engine and tender have been cleaned, painted, re-lettered, and beautifully preserved. A new fence surrounds the exhibit, and the area is now equipped with electricity, security lighting, and refurbished original details such as the headlight, number boards, and classification lights—all soon to be illuminated at night.

Adding to the display is a fully restored double-mount Union Switch & Signal lower-quadrant semaphore, now functional and lit after dark, creating a visually captivating tribute to railroading’s golden era.

Dunsmuir is more than a stop on the map—it’s a living storybook of California’s railroading legacy and a gateway to some of the state’s most stunning natural wonders. Whether you're here to relive the romance of the rails, explore the great outdoors, or simply enjoy the historic charm of our downtown, Dunsmuir welcomes you aboard.
